The dark side of humanity is another theme in the story. Spenser spends a great deal of his life fighting crime. Spenser was a cop once and is now a private investigator. Spenser has been involved in many cases that involved all kinds of crime. In this novel, Spenser travels to Los Angeles to help a television reporter investigate corruption in the movie industry. Spenser goes to LA and finds the city to be much like his hometown of Boston, with a fascinating collection of people and the common congestion typical of large cities. However, Spenser also sees corruption in LA that is not common to his beloved Boston.
