One of the major themes in the book, A Rumor of War, is that of personal identity. Caputo, as a boy, is trying to identify with the war heroes that he's reading about. When it becomes apparent that there will be another war, he's anxious to prove that he's as much a hero (and in his mind...a man) as those who fought before him.
