Relationships are a recurring idea in this novel. Sir George and Lady Hallim have decided that Robert should marry Lizzie Hallim, which is the reason why they returned to the castle in Heugh. But Lizzie preferred Jay to Robert and married him instead. She didn't know that their marriage was based on a lie about the Jamisson's mining the coal on the Hallim property, which she said she would never allow. Their happy marriage fell apart when she found out about the coal operation and a mining accident. This caused her to defy her husband and father-in-law by saying she would testify in Mack's behalf at his London trial. She also told Jay that she would be his wife in name only. To save the family from public humiliation, Jay had to testify for Mark to save him from hanging.
