But she went on feeling the soft, sheeny luxurious things--with both hands now, holding them up to see them glisten, and to feel them glide serpentlike through her fingers.

The above quote foreshadows Mrs. Sommer's temptation to spend her money on herself.... rather than purchase what she'd initially intended. Her "serpentlike" actions speak to the devil in the Garden of Eden, tempting Adam and Eve.
