Shpigelsky's story about the young girl with two suitors is symbolic of Vera's situation in which she is courted by one suitor but in love with another. At the end of his story, the young girl remains unable to decide between the two men, foreshadowing the emotional upheaval that both Natalya and Vera will experience when the find themselves in similar situations.
