Shakespeare uses the night as a point of confusion. It is dark and characters see, but don't see, hear, but don't hear, and ultimately assume a great deal many things. The quarrel between the Fairy royalty serves to move the plot further because of King Oberon's decision to teach Titania ' a lesson' by applying the flower juice to her eyes. The woods are used because it is easy to get turned around in the woods, to lose direction, to become confused.
