Dedication is a recurring idea in the book. Many people from all walks of life were involved in the war effort. They chose a side and a role based on their beliefs and were willing to dedicate their life to their cause. This is true of everyone from couriers, to resistance groups to soldiers. Stephenson himself made many trips from New York to London in spite of the dangers because of his dedication. People like movie stars, passed information and served as couriers.
