New characters are introduced along Beah's journey. They add texture to the narrative as well as to Beah's personality. Children like Musa traveled with Ishmael. Musa was very good at telling stories, and he would entertain the others at night when they were soldiers. Josiah was 11 years old. He was forced into soldier-hood, and slept in the same tent as Ishmael. His gruesome death spurred Ishmael on to killing the rebel soldiers.
