Youth is another theme in the book. Dave was a young man when his parents died, barely twenty-one. He was a carefree college student when he learned of his mother's illness and was forced to deal with his father's death. After his mother died, Dave suddenly found himself the guardian of a young boy. Despite the overwhelming responsibility this dumped on Dave's shoulders, he was still a young man. Dave lived his life like a young man, picking homes for him and his brother to live in based on their ability to slide across the floor in socks. Dave put off getting a job because he had the money he needed to get along and did not see the need to have a full time job. Dave was young and he acted like he was young.
