There is not simply one problem and solution in A Farewell to Arms, but I would say the largest problem is Frederic Henry's desire to find meaning in his life and a source of faith. He finds the solution to this in his relationship with Catherine, but ultimately her death causes his own spirtual death that is implied by him walking alone in the rain back to his hotel.
