Bildungsroman is very much a theme in this book. Early on, Robert takes on mature responsibilities. When his efforts fail, such as treating the apple trees for pests, the result affects the whole family. The group relies on Robert's work. He must rise early every morning and do what seems to be a half-day's work before he goes to school.
