Good versus evil is a recurring idea in the story. Those that serve a force for good refer to the one that they serve as the Light or the Creator. The evil force that is in play in the story is called the Dark One, or the Keeper. There are a few characters in the book that hide what they are behind different names so that they are not seen as servants of evil, such as Carridin, who is an Inquisitor of the Light, or Alviarin, who is Black Ajah, but is at the Tower of Light.
