Tolerance is another theme in the book. Hattie is a very tolerant person, though she is incredibly shy. She doesn't understand why other people seem so incredibly intolerant. On her first day of summer vacation, Hattie heads downtown. She stops to see what movie is playing. She knows she doesn't have the money to go but also knows that her Nana would take her if Hattie asks. But she says that if Nana goes to the movies, Hattie will have to dress up and wear gloves, which means she can't eat chocolate or popcorn.
