Describe symbolism in A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

In A Clockwork Orange, cigarettes are symbolic of death and referred to as "cancers". Over the course of the novel, we see "cancers" represent perceptions of self (being cool), coping (smoking when anxious), or merely as a statement of rebellion.
