David Bowman was the commander of the original Discovery, who narrowly escaped Hal's attempts to kill the crew. Dave once managed to deactivate Hal and enter the monolith, and reemerges as an extraordinary being who gathers information about life on Earth, Jupiter's moon Europa, and Jupiter itself. He warns the crew of Leonov that they must flee Jupiter quickly, and recreates Hal as a being like himself once the original Discovery is destroyed.
