The Scarlet Letter

The suggestion is that both Dimmesdale and Hester share the same scorching brand of shame. What do you think this means?

Dimmesdale is the man Hester had her affair with. He is Pearl's father. They share the shame of Hester's adultery, as well as the birth of a child out of wedlock.
