In Chapter Twenty-Five, the novel's conclusion, Okonkwo is not at his compound when the white men come looking for him. The men gathered at Okonkwo’s obi offer to show the men where Okonkwo is. They take the men to where Okonkwo has hung himself. They hope that the white men will help them take his body down and bury it. They explain only strangers can handle the body of a person who has committed suicide. Obierika tells the commissioner that Okonkwo was one of the greatest men in the village, driven to kill himself by the white men. The commissioner thinks that the story will make an interesting addition to the book he is planning to write about the Nigerian people.
