I believe Pat needed to do something in his life to heal his white guilt. As quoted in the novel, "But the shadow that hovered over me, white guilt, still had to be reckoned with" (Conroy 14). He is able to achieve his mission. At the end of the novel he states, and I quote, "I felt much beauty in my year with them. It hurt very badly to leave them" (Conroy 323).
