Who is Captain Nichols from The Moon and Sixpence and what is their importance?

Captain Nichols is the old beachcomber, who suggests to Strickland that he go to Tahiti. The two men spend time a short time being homeless together, but Crabbe later suspects that Captain Nichols has never even met Strickland.
