Why did Longstreet ultimately fight for the Confederacy?

Like most Southerners, Longstreet believed that his way of life and states rights, as well as his home were being threatened. It is important to note, however, that Longstreet worked adamantly FOR civil rights after the war was over. Many historians agree that his purpose in joining the southern cause was "not" because he agreed with slavery.
