Explain why pigeons were important to Darwin’s thinking. How did the pigeons relate to what he observed in the Galapagos?

We have been talking about Darwin for awhile in class now and I believe it's because where he grew up there was an abundunce of pigeons. So those where the birds he had to work with.
I believe he grew up in England and those were the types of birds he had to work with there. He also worked with others but this is just what we talked about in class.
