Since the prisoner in charge of their block was kind, and since there was no work to be done, Elie and his father tried to avoid being transported. How were they able to avoid being transported?

There were many instances where Elie and his father avoided transport. There were also instances in which they were unable to avoid it. Eli and his father lied about their ages, and they positioned themselves to avoid selection. In the end, they were transported from Auschwitz to Buchenwald where Elie's father died.
