The ball at La Vaubyessard creates an eye opening moment for Ellen. The Marquis' home leaves her envious, and almost resentful. She admires the luxuries, the furnishings, and the grounds. Ellen sees herself living the life of an aristocrat but resents her husband because he so obviously doesn't fit in.
