Dr. Jekyll was trying to separate his good side from his bad side. He created a potion that allowed him to do this. When he transformed into Mr. Hyde he was free of conscience and able to commit murder with no problem. However, Dr. Jekyll ultimately began transforming without the potion and lost control of Mr. Hyde, his "darker" side.
