Act 2, Scene 4

Benvolio and Mercutio enter. They speak about where Romeo is and where he went the night before, after the feast. Mercutio makes fun of Romeo for pining over Rosaline. Benvolio informs Mercutio that Tybalt has sent Romeo a challenge to a duel.

Romeo arrives and argues with Mercutio over where he's been. The Nurse arrives with Peter looking for Romeo. Mercutio and Benvolio leave. Romeo tells the Nurse to tell Juliet to meet him this afternoon at Friar Laurence's cell; they will be married there today. He offers her money for delivering the message to Juliet, but she refuses. He tells the Nurse that she should later hide behind the abbey wall, where Romeo will send her a rope ladder so he can climb up to Juliet's bedchamber.
