Act 1, Scene 3

Act 1, Scene 3

The scene shifts to the Duke of Albany's castle, where his wife, Goneril, is speaking to her servant. The servant, Oswald, tells Goneril that Lear hit him because he had scolded the king's jester, the Fool.

Goneril listens to Oswald and decides that she and her whole crew have been abused lately by the king's excessively rude behavior. She tells Oswald he should fight back, and that she will do the same. Goneril leaves the stage to go write her sister Regan. In the letter she will encourage Regan to act with similar strength when their father the king goes for his monthly visit.
