Scandinavian design is known for its sleek modernism. But Lucky magazine, which has a monthly feature called "Shopping Report" that looks at retail, fashion and whatever else is for sale in a given destination, found a lot more in Copenhagen than neutral colors and smooth shapes.
The shopping report on the Danish capital in Lucky's July issue starts with Creme de la Creme a la Edgar, where you'll find folkloric, handcrafted items, from blankets to skirts to toys, at Kompagnistraede 8. At Norrevoldgade 25, you'll find an unusual purveyor: Dahls Flagfabrik, which has been selling flags since 1846 and stocks flags of all sizes and styles from hundreds of nations, emblazoned on everything from toothpicks to ties. Hay CPH, located at Pilestraede 29-31, is the domain of Danish industrial designer Rolf Hay, where you'll find award-winning furniture as well as smaller affordable objects like figurines and drinking glasses.
Holly Golightly, at Gammel Mont 2, is a tiny boutique, while the four-story Illums Bolighus, at Amagertorv 10, is described by Lucky as "the holy grail for lovers of Scandinavian design." If modernism isn't your thing, look for antique styles, traditional tea sets and other formal housewares at Solvkaelderen, at Kompagnistraede 1.
Tekinoktay Finest Lingerie is at Silkegade 13, while Wood Wood is at Krystalgade 4 and 7, described by Lucky as "the coolest boutique in the city," with streetwear displayed in colorful modular cubes. Bodum, of coffee-press fame, is located at Ostergade 10, and By Malene Birger, which Lucky calls "the most talked-about label coming out of Denmark at the moment," sells its feminine clothes from Antonigade 10.
