Their ubiquitous single is a collaboration between the twins, who write and coproduce everything, and Hot 97's DJ Cipha Sounds. After lacing their sultry harmonies over a promo on his mix show in November 2003, Cipha facilitated their deal with Next Plateau/Universal four months later. Their as-yet-untitled debut LP promises to be a sonic goodie bag full of hip hop flavor.
Raised in Queens, the girls credit older brother, Nelson, 23, aka DJ Will Divide, and stepdad Luis Mejias, also a DJ, for instilling their passion for music. "We had to appreciate everything, from Bob Marley to Nirvana," says the cornrowed Natalie, the first to come out of the womb and the more outspoken one. Adds Nicole, the instrumentalist (guitar, bongos, conga) of the group: "We want to show people we're more than just that hot record."
In fact, they have an even hotter record. In their response to Mario Winans's "I Don't Wanna Know," titled "Time to Go"-which both use the same Enya sample employed by the Fugees's "Ready or Not"- the guy cheats first and gets what he deserves. "The world is theirs," says Angie Martinez, who throws down a scathing verse on the track. "Now it's up to them to ride it out into the sunset."
With the versatility to shift from club smash to mix-tape delicacy, Nina Sky proves it's more than just Lumidee, the sequel. "There really hasn't been a Hispanic artist that represents like we do," says Nicole. "But if you're paying attention, you'll hear a lot of good stuff from us." And when you reach for the sky, there's no limit.
