U.S. military deaths in Iraq hit 2,983

As of Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at least 2,983 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 2,391 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

The AP count is nine higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Wednesday at 10 a.m. EST.

The British military has reported 126 deaths; Italy, 33; Ukraine, 18; Poland, 18; Bulgaria, 13; Spain, 11; Denmark, six; El Salvador, five; Slovakia, four; Latvia, three; Estonia, Netherlands, Thailand, two each; and Australia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Romania, one death each.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

_ A Marine was killed Wednesday in Anbar province.

_ A soldier died Wednesday from injuries sustained when his vehicle rolled over south of Baghdad on Tuesday.

_ A soldier died Saturday of non-combat related injuries on Logistics Support Area Anaconda.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

_ Army Sgt. Jae S. Moon, 21, Levittown, Pa., died Monday in Baghdad of wounds suffered when an explosive detonated near his vehicle Dec. 14; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

_ Army Spc. Elias Elias, 27, Glendora, Calif., died Saturday in Baghdad when an explosive detonated near his vehicle; assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

_ Army Sgt. John T. Bubeck, 25, Collegeville, Pa., died Tuesday in Baghdad from wounds suffered when an explosive detonated near his vehicle Monday; assigned to the 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

_ Two soldiers died Monday in Baghdad when an explosive detonated near their vehicle:

_ Army Pfc. Andrew H. Nelson, 19, Saint Johns, Mich.

_ Army Spc. Aaron L. Preston, 29, Dallas.

_ Both were assigned to the 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

_ Three soldiers died Saturday in Salman Pak when an explosive detonated near their vehicle:

_ Army Spc. Chad J. Vollmer, 24, Grand Rapids, Mich.

_ Army Pfc. Wilson A. Algrim, 21, Howell, Mich.

_ Army Pvt. Bobby Mejia II, Saginaw, Mich. No age was available.

_ They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry, Big Rapids, Mich.

_ Marine Lance Cpl. Stephen L. Morris, 21, Lake Jackson, Texas; killed Dec. 24 in Anbar province; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

_ Marine Lance Cpl. Myles C. Sebastien, 21, Opelousas, La.; died Dec. 20 from wounds suffered in combat in Anbar province; assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
