Rain was expected across much of the nation on Tuesday, and forecasters said tornadoes and hail with damaging winds were possible in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic.
A low-pressure system in the upper Mississippi Valley was expected to move eastward through the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, southern New England and northern Mid-Atlantic, bringing widespread rain.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast for the Southern Plains and the lower Mississippi Valley, where large hail and tornadoes were possible. Storms were also likely over the Four Corners and the High Plains.
A storm system approaching the West Coast was expected to spread rain across the Pacific Northwest. Snow showers could develop in higher elevations.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 25 degrees at Embarrass, Minn., to a high of 107 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
