Entertainment highlights during the week of Feb. 3-9:
1944: Bing Crosby and the John Scott Trotter Orchestra recorded "Swinging on a Star" in Los Angeles for Decca Records.
1959: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash in Iowa.
1964: The Beatles made their first live US television appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." It's estimated 73 million people tuned in to watch the band perform five songs, including "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
1979: K-Mart pulled Steve Martin's comedy album "Let's Get Small" for being in bad taste.
1980: Pink Floyd performed "The Wall" for the first time in the U.S. The band only did the show in Los Angeles and New York.
1983: Singer Karen Carpenter died of cardiac arrest in Downey, Calif., at age 32. She had suffered from the eating disorder anorexia nervosa.
1987: Liberace died at his home in Palm Springs, Calif., of AIDS-related complications. He was 67.
1997: "The Simpsons" became the longest-running prime-time animated series, beating the record previously held by "The Flintstones."
2001: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman announced their separation after 11 years of marriage.
2005: Paul McCartney performed at the Super Bowl halftime show in Jacksonville, Fla. He was the first act to play that gig following Janet Jackson exposing her breast at the previous year's Super Bowl halftime show.
2006: Sly and the Family Stone reunited for a performance at the Grammys. Stone had not performed live in 19 years.
