What hotel would you stay in if money were no object?

Robb Report, a magazine about luxury lifestyles, has just inaugurated an annual guide _ on newsstands this fall _ to "Luxury Hotels: The World's Ultimate City Escapes."

Editor Bruce Wallin, who reviewed some of the properties, tells readers that exceptional personalized service, combined with a superior setting and first-rate facilities, are part of what distinguishes these hotels. At the Peninsula Beverly Hills, for example, the staff is schooled on guests' identities, preferences and special requests. They know who is having a birthday while staying at the hotel, and they memorize the names of guests' children and pets.

Other hotels on Robb Report's list include Halekulani in Honolulu, The Mansion at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Sorrento Hotel in Seattle, The Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco, St. Regis in Houston, Inn of the Anasazi in Santa Fe, N.M., Brown Palace in Denver, Mandarin Oriental in Miami, the Hermitage in Nashville, Charleston Place in Charleston, S.C., The Hay-Adams in Washington, Nine Zero in Boston, The Peninsula Chicago, and The Ritz-Carlton New York.

In Europe, Robb Report's recommendations include Claridge's in London, Hotel Ritz in Madrid, Hotel Gritti Palace in Venice, Hotel Hassler Roma in Rome, Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, Villa Kennedy in Frankfurt, the Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin, and The Balmoral in Edinburgh.

In Asia, best luxury hotels cited by Robb Report included The Peninsula in Hong Kong, the Grand Hyatt in Shanghai, The Imperial in New Delhi, and Hotel Seiyo Ginza in Tokyo.
