NYSE stocks engaged in seesaw trading in a fairly narrow range Tuesday. The NYSE composite and S&P 500 edged 0.1% higher, while the Dow Jones industrials gave up 0.2%. Volume pulled back.
Dick's Sporting Goods DKS gapped up and rose 4.85 to 60.43 on four times usual trade, closing above its 50-day moving average after five sessions below it.
The sporting goods retailer earned 83 cents a share in the fiscal second quarter, up 77% from last year and 7 cents above views. It raised its third-quarter and full-year profit outlook.
Mindray Medical International MR gained 1.45 to 32.31 on brisk volume as it reclaimed its 50-day. Shares are up more than 130% from their September '06 IPO. The Chinese maker of patient monitoring devices, diagnostic lab gear and ultrasound imaging systems was featured in Monday's New America.
Koppers Holdings KOP added 1.20 to a new high of 36.61 on higher-than-normal volume. The maker of carbon compounds and wood treatment products broke out of a two-month, V-shaped base Monday.
Medco Health Solutions MHS rose for a fifth straight session as it picked up 1.96 to a new closing high of 85.75 on brisk trade. The stock has found support along its 10-week moving average since mid-December.
Boston Beer SAM recouped 1.17, or 3%, to close at 45.37 on twice average volume. The Samuel Adams brewer's shares fell 6% Monday.
On the downside, CNH Global CNH shed 1.59 to 45.60 on more than double typical action. Shares are 23% below their July 23 high. The farm equipment maker's profit growth has slowed the past two quarters, from 129% to 120% and 60%.
