Sierra Pacific Resources, parent company of Nevada Power, is seeking proposals for renewable energy resources.

Nevada Power and sister company Sierra Pacific Power will consider proposals on solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and other resources eligible for portfolio energy credits under the Nevada renewable portfolio standard.

The company needs to purchase enough renewable energy to meet federally mandated goals (20 percent of all the companies' energy must come from renewable resources or energy efficiency measures by 2015).

While the company is currently on track to meet those goals, it is seeking the proposals in order to stay ahead of the quota.

"Renewable resources are an integral part of our energy supply strategy," said Sierra Pacific Resources Renewable Energy Executive Tom Fair . "We are currently involved in more than 30 renewable energy projects in Nevada and we want to increase that number significantly."

Projects will be chosen based on price of purchasing the power, technical aspects of the project and the bidder's financial stability (to ensure they area capable of completing the project).

Companies interested in submitting a proposal, or those seeking more information on the process or renewable energy laws can log on to Sierra Pacific Resources' Web site at: http://www.nevadapower.com/company/RFPs/renewable/index.cfm.

The deadline for proposals is Nov. 13.

In other news, the power conglomerate has joined forces with seven other power companies to improve energy efficiency.

Sierra Pacific Resources, Con Edison, Duke Energy, Edison International, Great Plains Energy, Pepco Holdings, PNM Resources and Xcel Energy have pledged to invest a combined $1.5 billion in energy efficiency measures and to create a national institute for electric efficiency.

The combined efforts are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30 million tons by 2016 and could affect up to 20 million customers in 22 states.

Sierra Pacific Resources will request about $135 million in investment increases for customer programs over the next 3 years.

"A top priority for our company is finding ways to help our customers reduce their energy consumption and lower their bills," said Sierra Pacific Resources President Michael Yackira . "We are proud to join other industry leaders who are taking action to address environmental concerns."

The company also recently announced it is forming an advisory panel on geothermal energy.

The Nevada Geothermal Energy Technical Advisory Panel will provide advice and insight to Sierra Pacific Resources executives on geothermal resource issues, development and prospects in Nevada .

The group will meet quarterly and is expected to be composed of world leaders in geothermal resource analysis.
