The U.S. military on Wednesday released the names of two Navy sailors who were shot and killed on a U.S. Naval base in Bahrain this week, allegedly by a fellow sailor.
Seaman Anamarie Sannicolas Camacho, 20, of Panama City, Fla., and Seaman Genesia Mattril Gresham, 19, of Lithonia, Ga., were killed early Monday in one of the barracks on the Naval Support Activity Bahrain base, a statement released by the U.S. Navy said.
The third sailor, who a Navy official previously identified as a male, remains in critical condition at a Bahrain hospital suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the statement said. The Navy did not release his name.
The Navy said initial investigations indicate that the three sailors were acquainted, "but the extent of their relationships and the details of the shootings are still under investigation."
Earlier this week, a State Department official said the incident appeared to be a case of a jilted boyfriend shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend and then shooting himself. The official said it was not clear if the second female victim was romantically involved.
The shootings took place around 5 a.m., and the two women were pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was limited to the three sailors, was not terror related and remains under investigation.
Camacho enlisted in the Navy in June 2006 and Gresham enlisted five months later, the statement said. All three sailors were assigned to the Bahrain base.
Bahrain, a tiny island nation on the Persian Gulf, is a U.S. ally and home to the Navy's 5th Fleet, which is responsible for an area of about 2.5 million square miles of water including the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean.
About 3,600 personnel work on the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base, located just outside Bahrain's capital, Manama. The base supports U.S. naval ships in the region.
