`Melancholia' highlights Paris Opera

The world premiere production of Georg Friedrich Haas' "Melancholia" and Anna Netrebko singing Giulietta in a revival of Bellini's "I Capuleti e i Montecchi" highlight the 2007-8 Paris Opera season.

There will be new stagings of Wagner's "Tannhaeuser" and "Parsifal," Dukas' "Ariane et Barbe-Bleue," Verdi's "Luisa Miller," Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress," Berg's "Wozzeck" and Dallapicolla's "Il Prigioniero," director Gerard Mortier said Thursday. It will be his next to last season is Paris before he becomes general manager and artistic director of the New York City Opera.

"Melancholia" opens June 9, 2008, at the Palais Garnier with Emilio Pomarico conducting a cast that includes Otto Katzameier, Melanie Walz, Johannes Schmidt, Angelika Luz, Daniel Gloger, Annette Elster and Martyn Hill. It's a co-production with Opera Vest in Bergen, Norway.

"I Capuleti e i Montecchi" opens at the Bastille on May 24, 2008, with Netrebko, Joyce DiDonato, Matthew Polanzani, Mikhail Petrenko and Giovanni Battista Parodi. Evelino Pido conducts, and the production is by Robert Carsen.

The season opens Sept. 8 at the Garnier with Solveig Kringelborn in a revival of Carsen's staging of Strauss' "Capriccio."

"Ariane et Barbe-Bleue" begins Sept. 13 at the Bastille with Anna Viebrock directing and Sylvain Cambreling conducting Willard White, Deborah Polaski and Felicity Palmer.

Seiji Ozawa conducts Carsen's production of "Tannhaeuser" that opens Dec. 6 at the Bastille. The cast includes Stephen Gould, Matthais Goerne, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Beatrice Uria-Monzon and Franz Josef Selig.

"Luisa Miller" opens Feb. 14, 2008, at the Bastille with Anna Maria Martinez and Ramon Vargas in a Gilbert Deflo production conducted by Massimo Zanetti. "The Rake's Progress" starts March 3, 2008, at the Garnier with Laurent Naouri, Rene Schirrer, Laura Claycomb and Jane Henschel in a Luc Bondy production conducted by Edward Gardner.

"Parsifal" starts its run March 4, 2008, at the Bastille and stars Christopher Ventris, Waltraud Meier and Selig. Hartmut Haenchen conducts, and the production is by Krzysztof Warlikowski. "Wozzeck" opens March 29, 2008, at the Bastille with Cambreling conducting Simon Keenlyside and Angela Denoke in a Christoph Marthaler production.

"Il Prigioniero" starts April 10, 2008, at the Garnier with Rosalind Plowright and Evgeny Nikitin. Hans Zender conducts and Lluis Pasqual directs.
