An officer who killed an armed teenager running from the scene of a reported break-in was involved in another fatal shooting, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
Evan Harlow, 16, died Monday after being shot more than once by Louisville Metro Police Officer Tom Hodgkins, deputy Coroner Larry Carroll said.
Hodgkins had chased Harlow on foot for about a mile into a wooded area, and fired when the teen produced a handgun, police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said.
In 2003, an investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Public Integrity Unit concluded that Hodgkins acted appropriately when he killed Derek Jaggers, 27, during a robbery attempt at a home, Mitchell said.
The investigation found that Hodgkins acted to save the life of the homeowner, who had a gun held to her head, Mitchell said.
Harlow's aunt, Michelle Harlow, told The Courier-Journal of Louisville that the teen had been in trouble before, including spending time in a juvenile center, but added: "He has never done anything that would justify the police shooting him."
