Talib Kweli and Broadway composer Zane Mark, along with West and Common, have helped pay for a massive tractor trailer that will lug donated goods from the site of Powell's event (New York City's Canal Room) to Clairborne County Health Center in Port Gibson, Mississippi.
A former "Real World" cast member and former VIBE staff writer, Powell, along with as-yet-unannounced special guests, is throwing a major benefit event at the TriBeCa hotspot on Thursday, September 8, and he is inviting anyone with a giving heart to drop by. Admission is free, but in an effort to help out the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Powell insists that each individual bring one or more of the following items:
Canned goods
Can openers
Clothing for children and adults, all sizes
Adult shoes and sneakers
Adult socks
Children's shoes and sneakers
Children socks
Bottles of water
Diapers
Baby wipes
Baby food
Baby aspirin
Aspirin
Vitamins
Toilet paper
Sanitary napkins
Portable radios with batteries
Plastic forks, knives, and spoons
Cotton balls
Cotton swabs
Hydrogen peroxide BUT NOT rubbing alcohol, because that is flammable
Band aids
Shaving cream
Male AND female razors
Blankets
Air mattresses
Sheets
Pillows and pillow cases
Gift cards for gas
Wal mart gift cards
Garbage bags
Cleaning supplies
Soap
Toothpaste and toothbrushes

Books for children, including coloring books

More details: if you're bringing clothing and shoes/sneakers, please make sure they are new or in clean and good condition. If you are placing donated items in a bag, please label the bag something obvious like "children's shoes" or "adult shoes." Canal Room has generously donated the space, but there will be a cash bar all evening. Guest DJs, musical performers and corporate sponsors will be announced shortly.
