Hip Hop Takes Over Chicago's Arts Festival

The Chicago Host Committee for the 2006 National Hip Hop Political Convention will present the "This is Hip Hop Pavillion and Soundstage" during the festival, which runs from September 2-5 in Washington Park, 51st and Cottage Grove.

Festival visitors can check out the five elements of hip hop: DJ-ing, break dancing, MC-ing, graffiti, and knowledge, on display throughout the weekend. There will be spoken word performances, and daily panel discussions will address and offer solutions to various issues of major concern within the black community and the hip hop community.

MC Lyte, Special Ed, White Boy, Malik Yusef, Red Storm and others will perform at the festival.

Workshops will include Hip Hop and the African Diaspora: How Hip Hop is practiced around the world; Can’t Knock the Hustle: Reflections of old school/visions of the new and how Hip Hop influences Hip Hop lovers in their professional careers; This is Hip Hop: How Hip Hop can be used as a tool for cultural and community healing; Youth, Families, and Mental Health; Is God in the House? A discussion on Hip Hop, religion, and spirituality; What if it was yo’ Momma: A discussion on sexuality, imagery, and male/female relations in Hip Hop; National Hip Hop Political Convention- Represent: Elected Officials engage the Hip Hop generation in the electoral process; and Is Civil Rights Dead.

Confirmed panelists include Senator Kwame Raul, State Representative Constance Howard, Cashus D, members of the Zulu nation, and various others.
