NEW YORK, NY [June 4, 2007] - FORTUNE managing editor Andy Serwer announced today the appointment of Peter Gumbel as Europe Editor. Gumbel was previously at TIME in Paris where he worked as a senior writer covering European business and politics. Based in FORTUNE's offices in Paris, Gumbel will start with FORTUNE on June 4 and will be responsible for FORTUNE's European coverage.

A journalist and foreign correspondent for more than 20 years, Gumbel spent 16 years at the Wall Street Journal prior to his near five-year-run at TIME, working in New York, Moscow, Paris, Berlin, and Los Angeles, where he served as the paper's bureau chief for four years.

While in Moscow, Gumbel covered the rise and fall of President Gorbachev and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union, earning him two awards from the Overseas Press Club of America. Gumbel has also won several other prestigious journalism awards, including being named Journalist of the Year by the London-based Work Foundation in 2006.

Gumbel's book on France, French Vertigo, was published in November 2006. Written in French, it received glowing reviews and was frequently cited in the recent French presidential election campaign.

Aside from his achievements as a journalist and author, Gumbel has also taught at Science Po's graduate school of journalism in Paris. He is fluent in French, German and Italian.
