IDF troops battle militants in Bureij refugee camp-

IDF troops clashed with Hamas militants during an operation in the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza.  Five soldiers were wounded in various incidents that saw at least five militants killed and some 34 injured.

Vital medical supplies transferred to Gaza-

As requested by the United Nations World Health Organization, the IDF permitted transfer of vital medical supplies into Gaza yesterday.

The material included antibiotics, anesthetics and an assortment of  pharmaceuticals.

Israeli soldier detained in Bethlehem getting his car fixed-

An Israeli soldier was detained by PA authorities when he entered Bethlehem, apparently to get his car fixed.  He  and a 17 year old friend who was with him at the time, were turned over to IDF Military Police for questioning.

Gaza fuel rationing commences-

The Hamas-led Palestinian government in Gaza commenced a fuel rationing program that calls for cuts in basic electricity usage for up to eight hours every day.  The new measure is an outcome of Israeli cutbacks in the amount of fuel that's permitted into Gaza.  Gaza depends on the State of Israel for all of it's fuel and about 60 percent of it's electricity.

Israeli Ministry of Religious Affairs reinstated-

The Ministry of Religious Affairs, dissolved by the Shinui Party back in 2003, was reinstated on Sunday.  The renewed ministry, headed by an MK from Shas, will oversee the Chief Rabbinate, the Rabbinical Court and the Yeshivas.   

Suicide bomber wrecks Iraq's Army Day celebrations-

A suicide bomber detonated among spectators during Iraq's Army Day celebrations, killing at least eleven people including two Iraqi soldiers who bravely jumped the man to try stopping him from igniting his payload.  The blast occurred during a ceremony in honor of soldiers fighting the insurgency.  Another bomb went off nearby. In a separate incident, Sheik Ismaiel Abbas was shot dead near his home in Baghdad.  He had been part of a group seeking to counter militias in his neighborhood.

Sectarian fighting in Pakistani tribal region-

Fighting between Shia and Sunni Muslims in Pakistan have sent hundreds of civilians from Pakistan's tribal areas fleeing into Afghanistan's south-eastern provinces.  The US is reportedly beefing up it's covert operations in Pakistan to seek out al-Qaeda terror leaders and to help stabilize the Pakistani government.

Tamil Tiger intelligence chief killed-

Alias Colonel Charles, intelligence chief of the rebel group Tamil Tigers was killed when his vehicle hit a land mine planted by government troops.  Shanmuganathan Ravishankar alias Charles is credited with having planned numerous terror attacks including the bombing of Central Colombo Bank in 1996 which killed 86 people and injured hundreds.

Georgian incumbent wins reelection in narrow victory-

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili won reelection with a slim 52.8 percent majority, enough to avoid a runoff.  The opposition claims the count was rigged, though the international observer mission says the contest was basically fair.

Severe flooding in Australia-

Heavy rains in Australia have wreaked havoc in New South Wales, bringing on the worst flooding there in over 20 years.  With bridges washed away and roads turning to rivers, hundreds of residents have left their homes, and entire towns are depending on helicopters for supplies.

Malawi man gets hard labor for 'doing witchcraft'-

Chikumbutso Mponda of the Republic of Malawi in southeastern Africa, was sentenced to five years hard labor for violating Section 4 of that country's Witchcraft Act.  Citing an increase in incidents of witchcraft, Magistrate Hends Kantchere of the Mponela Magistrate Court lambasted the defendant for using a magic plane to get around.  He was discovered by several people coming home from a drinking party, sometime after he had apparently fallen out of his vehicle.
