Reform Movement head laments weak Shabbat observance-
The head of the Union for Reform Judaism called on that movement's members to embrace Shabbat and observe a full 24 hour day of rest. Speaking to about 5000 adherents, Rabbi Eric Yoffie explained that Shabbat morning has too often become a private ceremony for Bar and Bat Mitzvah families, and that it was time to reclaim Shabbat morning for prayer, saying "In our 24/7 culture, the boundary between work time and leisure time has been swept away...for our stressed-out, sleep deprived families, the Torah's mandate to rest looks relevant and sensible". He acknowledged though, that changing the entrenched Reform Shabbat morning service would be difficult, in part because the Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremony is for many parents their most meaningful congregational experience and they expect the service to be a private affair. Any new theological changes, he said, will emphasize the 'Thou shalts', and will not engage a "endless list of negative prohibitions."
Astronomers spot black hole beaming jet of cosmic radiation-
Astronomers from NASA reporting in the Astrophysical Journal say they've spotted a super-massive black hole beaming a nearby galaxy with a high-energy jet of cosmic radiation, sort of the way one could imagine a galaxy looking right down the barrel of a gun. Though highly disruptive, the massive influx of energy and radiation may actually serve the function of compressing inert gas together to form new star systems. Hazardous radiation and ultra-violet light bombards planets constantly, but life on earth is sheltered by a layer of protective ozone that absorbs up to 99 percent of that exposure.
