City Center, that Moorish palace of entertainment on West 55th Street, is known for its "Encores!" series, concert versions of vintage American musicals. Three are presented each year during the second half of the Broadway theater season.
Now the series is branching out with "Encores! Summer Stars." From July 9-29, it will present Patti LuPone as Mama Rose in "Gypsy," the Arthur Laurents-Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim musical about a young Gypsy Rose Lee and her domineering mother. An opening is set for July 12. Laurents will direct.
LuPone, most recently on Broadway in a revival of "Sweeney Todd," portrayed Mama Rose last summer at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Ill.
