Ask Jane:  Creating Trendy Concrete Countertops

Dear Jane:

I have a horrible tile countertop that I would love to change out, but I can't really afford stone, granite or any of the other great looking options out there.  Is there anything I can do on a limited budget?

- Hope W.,

Dear Hope,

Absolutely!   There are a number of great options that you might consider.   To start with, you could retile your countertop.   Now, we know that you may hate your current tile, but you might find a pattern or style out there that better suits your needs and your taste.  Many stone stores carry stone and granite tiles which are much more inexpensive than a full slab and when properly sealed can make a truly elegant counter top.

It might be that you simply hate the way your grout looks.  Grout gets grimy and stained over the years and can give even the most beautiful tile seem dull and lifeless.   With a little effort and a little patience, you can actually replace the grout or recolor the existing grout.   Consider choosing a different color to give your tile a truly fresh look.

You might also look at concrete.  It’s currently one of the hottest trends out there.  Not only is it inexpensive, but it’s also quite durable and your color choices are endless because it can be stained in a wide array of colors.  This is a definite do-it-yourself possibility and the unique look that you get from concrete will give any kitchen countertop an enviable flair.

You mentioned that you currently have a tile countertop.  Well, did you know that you can convert that tile into a concrete countertop with just a minimal amount of cost and labor?  One of our favorite projects from our book, BE JANE'S GUIDE TO HOME EMPOWERMENT is to add a thin layer of concrete to an existing tile countertop.  You use a power grinder to scuff up the tile’s surface and then apply a couple of thin coats of concrete right onto the tile!   Once you smooth out the finish and stain the concrete, you’ve got a beautiful new countertop.

We hope this helps!

Hugs ‘n hammers,

Jane
