Objective

Chapter 1, Making of a Marine

This book is set in the World War II. The object of this lesson will be to address some of the background information needed to understand Sledge's experiences.

Lesson

1) Write on the board WWII in large letters. Have the students write down a list of all the things they know about this war. Discuss this with the class. Chances are, many of the students were not able to create a very long list. Why is this? This war was an extremely important event in our history. Why do we not know more about it?

2) Split the class up into groups and assign each group a specific reason for the US joining World War II, e.g., the Nazi supremacy, the attacks on the allies, the attack on Pearl Harbor. Give each group some time and resources to research their assigned topic...
