Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

The objective of today's lesson is to introduce the class to the main character, Kit Tyler, and see what we can learn early on about her and her situation.

Lesson

1) Small-group activity: Have the class to break into groups of three or four. Ask them to discuss the chapter and review the various characters introduced.

2) Class discussion: Review Chapter 1, in which we are introduced to the main character. Ask the students who stands out as the main character (they should answer Kit). What do we learn about Kit in the first chapter? About her situation (traveling)? About her personality, etc.? Explain how they can identify the main character -- the character the story is mainly about and the one the reader follows closely throughout the novel.

3) Small-group activity: Ask the students to break back into their groups and create a chart showing what they feel the...
