"Polepole" takes place in Nairobi, Kenya, in contemporary times. The story takes place among members of the white community; many of them are journalists and filmmakers and live in comparative luxury in this predominantly poor, Black country.

2. In "Polepole," Daisy's comment of "I don't even know where I am" (3) has both a literal and a figurative meaning. Explain why this is so.

When Daisy says, "I don't even know where I am" (3,) she means, on a literal level, that she is in a stranger's house where she arrived by night--she does not know where in the Nairobi area the bungalow is. In a more figurative sense, though, Daisy is "lost" as a person--she has only a vague understanding of what has brought her to Kenya or into "the man's" bed.
