1. How do Astrid and Ingrid interact with one another in the beginning of the novel? Why?

Astrid feels guilty that she is tying her mother down, so she tries to be as easy to take care of as possible for fear that her mother will leave her. Ingrid is carefree and speaks nonchalantly to Astrid.

2. Why does Ingrid change so much after she meets and begins dating Barry?

Ingrid becomes consumed by passion when she meets Barry. She acts out of character because she has fallen in love and let her guard down. She thinks she has met a man who will not betray her like those before him have.

3. Why is Ingrid so upset that Barry has broken up with her?

Ingrid is not so much heartbroken over Barry as she is vengeful because she feels she is more worthy than he is. She is ashamed that a man she thinks should have never had a chance with her is able to have the final say in their relationship.
