Part One: Mom Versus the Gnats

-This novel in told in a series of letters between the multiple characters with narrative interjections by Bee.

-This section opens with Bee’s report card from Galer Street School, where she is in the 8th grade.

-Bee receives the highest grades and is described as a gifted, talented student by her teacher, Mr. Levy.

-Since Bee received the highest grades possible, over dinner that night, she reminds her parents, Elgin Branch and Bernadette Fox-Branch, that they told her “if I got perfect grades the whole way through, I could have anything I wanted for a graduation present” (8).

-Bee tells her parents that what she wants is a family trip to Antarctica over Christmas break.
