Objective: Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 In Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, symbolism is seen with Novalee's picture book, and the three gifts she is given in Chapter 2. Symbolism plays a very important part not only here, but throughout the story. The students will explore the concept of symbolism and how it can play an important part in a story.

1) 1. Class Discussion:
A. What is symbolism?
B. Who gave Novalee the gift of a baby book? How is the baby book symbolic to Novalee?
C. Novalee received a buckeye tree as a gift from whom? How is this symbolic?
D. Novalee has her own picture book. How is this picture book symbolic for Novalee?
E. What gift does Novalee receive from Sister Husband and how is this symbolic?

2. Debate: Split the class into 2 sections and have them debate on whether they think names given to the characters in this story are symbolic...
